Tally's razor-sharp teeth, super-fast reflexes, wolf-like eyes, and frightening beauty identify her immediately-Tally is a member of Special Circumstances. Programmed to keep social order in this futuristic world, the Specials are both feared and revered. Tally never wanted to be Special, but some talents cannot be denied. Specials keep the Pretties happy and naive, keep the Uglies wishing to be Pretty and-most importantly-keep the Smokies powerless. But their latest mission is to end the New Smoke forever, and there is still a little part of Tally that is telling her to think for herself-that remembers a time when Tally lived happily among the Smokies. Maybe the Specials aren't really protecting anyone but themselves. Scott Westerfeld's wildly popular Uglies series has been praised for introducing thought-provoking issues of vanity, idealism, and self control to its legions of teen readers. The final installment in this futuristic teen series has 16-year-old Tally Youngblood being made to work as a Special Circumstances agent on behalf of the government she has come to distrust. Carine Montbertrand creates the right level of drama at all the right moments in this twisted plot. Although the unique story demands a unique approach, Montbertrand goes a little overboard in her character portrayal. The gravelly voice she occasionally employs makes it difficult to distinguish between male and female characters, and the other pitches she chooses are downright odd. Still, teen listeners will enjoy the philosophical issues explored in the story. B.H. (c) AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine
